Update from El Saldavor.
Greetings:
Dear Friends:
Tuesday 2/13/2001
In the Chirilagua parish alone (comprised of forty five villages and towns), there are more than TWO THOUSAND homes
destroyed from the January 13th quake. To rebuild a very very simple but safe dwelling for each one just in our
alone would cost more than two million dollars. Unfortunately, then, the need is far greater than our capacity.
In the other three missions served by the Cleveland team, there are at least one thousand homes destroyed in each
parish. The latest quake hit areas that were not affected by the January 13th quake, and reduced to rubble other
areas that had been hit and were reconstructing.
Unfortunately, we are told to prepare for more. What is unknown is if yesterday's quake was a pre-shock to something
bigger or the "main event" itself. There is a possibility as well of other quakes still being generated
by the January 13th quake. The truth is, we have not stopped being shaken since
January 13th. It is rare for a day to pass without some strong aftershock sending us running outside. It's worse,
of course, when the aftershocks come at night. Así es la vida.
Must run now--more later!
Love to all,
Sr. Lisa Marie, OSU

Subject: continuing to pick up the pieces
Dear friends,
Thanks your concern. Not living in canvas and bamboo yet, just giving it serious consideration!
The World Data Center for Geology in Denver is now quantifying this as a 6.6 earthquake. We are saddened by the
latest reports of new fatalities, about 274 reported so far, and more homeless. All schools in the country are
closed until further notice as fresh damage is assessed and as a precaution to more shocks. We have not finished
evaluating all the damage from the January 13 quake in the forty five villages of Chirilagua, so this newest quake
will give us more to do. We have had more than three thousand tremors since January 13, more than thirty of which
qualify as earthquakes (any tremor or shock with a 4 or above magnitude on the Richter scale).
Seismologists are saying that serious aftershocks and quake sequences (one quake triggering a series of others
along different, sometimes new, faults) are to be expected for months, if not a few years, after a major quake.
It appears, then, that we could still expect more to come. All we can do is continue to pick up the pieces, keep
going, and entrust ourselves to God's loving Providence,
living in such a way that, if there is a repeat, it finds us loving God and neighbor.
People are experiencing all this as a strong call to conversion while grace continues to be at work in powerful
ways to bring healing on all levels. We continue to be witnesses to the persistence and fidelity of grace at work
in the midst of so much renewed distress and uncertainty.
So, thank you so much for your prayer support. We do feel it and need it. Keep it up.
still shaking and baking in El Salvador,
Happy Valentine's Day,
Sr. Lisa Marie, OSU
