OUR CHILDREN, OUR CHURCH AND OUR COMMUNITY.

Mission Statement of Christ the King Church

We, the members of Christ the King Parish,

Having grown into a multicultural faith community,

Commit ourselves to bring about a future

In which we accept God's challenge

To be a visible active presence of Jesus Christ.

In response to this call we are dedicated to

Promoting lifelong spiritual growth

Celebrating and sharing faith,

Working for justice, and building community.

Christ the King in the Future

Rooted in the parish Mission Statement and encouraged by

The Pastoral Letter of Bishop Anthony M. Pilla.

"The Church in the City,"

Christ the King is poised to enter

The Third Millennium

By partnering in community leadership with

St. Philomena, our Mother Church in East Cleveland,

In order to insure a diverse and supportive

Roman Catholic presence in East Cleveland

And the surrounding area.

The two distinct congregations, identified now as

"The Catholic Community of East Cleveland,"

have as their mutual goal to spread the Good News by

being a compassionate and caring community

to all our neighbors and thus more effectively

build the Reign of God in our midst.

Citizenship and Discipleship

As citizens of the United States, we approach the celebration of July 4th with gratitude for the many freedoms we enjoy.  As disciples of Jesus, this occasion brings to mind he important question, “What connection is there between my citizenship and my discipleship?”

Father Kenneth Himes, a moral theologian from Washington Theological Union, suggests there is a very important link between citizenship and discipleship.  His talk, Catholic Political Responsibility in This Time and Place, highlighted six practices for American Catholics to consider as we reflect on being faithful disciples and citizens of a democratic nation.

1.      Respect politics.  There is a danger today that politics will become denigrated to the point that only the dishonest will seek political office.  But public service offers the chance to do much good.  When we honor those who hold the public trust, we increase the likelihood that people of integrity will be attracted to public service.

2.      Promote the common good.  Our Catholic tradition draws us beyond private concerns to the social nature of the human person and our responsibility for the well being of all.  Politics too, is concerned with the common good.

3.      Make politics responsive.  There are a number of ways to make our system more responsive to the needs of citizens, but Fr. Himes suggests that a good place to start might be with campaign finance reform to ensure that all voices are taken into account, and not just those of the rich and powerful.

4.      Revive political discourse.  Vaclav Havel, president of the Czech Republic, reminds us that democracy does not begin with elections but with conversations.  As believers, we need places where we can engage each other in the interplay of ideas and issues.

5.      Vote responsibly.  As citizens, participating in this basic act of democracy in an informed manner is a right and responsibility and essential to the preservation of our nation.  Voting gives us an opportunity to support people and policies that  provide for human need, safeguard human life and dignity and are concerned about wise stewardship of all that God has given us.

6.      Connect citizenship and discipleship.  Loving God and neighbor is at the heart of what it means to be a Christian, and that love can be expressed in a number of ways.  Helping to promote a healthy democracy where people, especially the weak and vulnerable, are treated with dignity and respect and assisted in reaching their potential, is certainly a good start in living out that command.

“Come, Holy Spirit, and open our hearts, minds and souls to your presence.  Grace us with the strength to follow the examples of Jesus.  Like Jesus, may the Spirit provide us with a voice to cry out for justice for the poor.  Remind us that what we do to the least of those among us, we do to you.”
