SCHEDULES
Most high, all-powerful and good God, you enkindled in the heart of St. Pio an ardent love for the sacrifice of your Son and great compassion for his brothers and sisters suffering in soul and in body. You marked this servant of yours, this Capuchin of prayer and of suffering with the sacred stagmata, thus giving the world a living image of our crucified Lord, Jesus Christ. May we follow his way of love and so share in His resurrection, who is lord forever and ever, Amen. _______________________________ Capuchin Franciscan Friars Province of St Augustine 230-37th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 154201 (800) 224 0330

Week: A characteristic of a
Christian family is the ability to assist others. The gospel today tells us not to gloat or feel pride in
this. Rather, “we have done what we
ought to have done.” The blessings we
enjoy are meant to be shared with others. May the Lord accept… the sacrifice you have made
this week. May God bless you for your generosity. Weekday Offering: $ 276.37 Sunday Offering: $ 330.00 Restoration: $
46.00 Donations: $ 324.00 cccccccccccccccc Please keep in prayer this
week… the sick, and shut-ins among
our parishioners. We remember this
week: Sr. Bernadette, Sr. M. Kevin, Mary Marable, Sr. Maria, Sr. Raphael, Sr. Mary Therese, Denis Flannery, Agnes Hollis, Joseph Mazza, Rose Nelli, Artemus Watts,
and Connie Warner. Bible Study Our
St. Paul Bible Study series continues this Monday night evening from 7:00pm –
8:30pm in the Guild Room. This week, we
continue to reflect on St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians. All are most welcome to attend! Just a Reminder Any
time you come to Church please remember to TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE or
PAGER. The ringing of these devices
during any Liturgical Celebration is truly a distraction to all who are taking
part in them. So please turn them off
as you enter this sacred place.
Thank you ! Welcome Bishop Roger ! We
are honored to welcome Bishop Roger Gries, OSB to St. Paul Shrine today for Fr.
Phil’s installation as pastor. Let us
continue to pray for all of our bishops and Church leaders who strive
faithfully each day to lead God’s people in the ways of the Gospel. Bishop Roger will return to St. Paul’s on
Saturday, December 4th, to preside at our celebration marking the
150th anniversary of the foundation of the Poor Clares of Perpetual
Adoration. Welcome to St. Paul’s We

Always! Happy belated Feast Day to Sr.
M. Raphael on September 29th and to Sr. M. Therese on October 3rd. Congratulations, and God bless you
always! Parish Pastoral Council The
Parish Pastoral Council is exploring the broad concept of evangelization and
how we can better fulfill this basic Christian ministry here at the
Shrine. Our thoughts to this point on
how to spread the Good News lead in many directions, from basic advertising to
the sharing of our Eucharistic and Franciscan spirituality to social and
community building activities. We hope
that you will see the fruits of our discussions borne out in many ways in the
months ahead. But always remember:
evangelization is still done best the old fashioned way, sharing the Good News
one person at a time. Council Chair
Dennis Trepanier and members Amos Jolly, Rosemarie Ludwig, Margaret Mazza and
Mike Newton are always open to your comments and ideas. Transitus and Solemnity of St. Francis of Assisi Once
again, we prepare to celebrate the Solemnity of St. Francis of Assisi, the
founder of the Franciscan Order and patron of the Capuchin-Franciscan
friars. We will begin our celebration
on Sunday evening, October 3rd at 7:00pm with Transitus, a service
of readings, song and silence to mark the passing (transitus) of St. Francis
from earthly life to eternal glory.
Light refreshments will be served following the service. At the 12:00 Mass on Monday, October 4th
we will join Franciscans all over the world in celebrating the Solemnity of St.
Francis, the little poor man of Assisi, Please join our Franciscan family here
at St. Paul’s for these special liturgies. Capuchin
Vocation News Fr. Tom Betz,
OFM Cap, Vocation Director for our Capuchin Province of St. Augustine recently
wrote with good news about provincial formation program. There are 32 men now engaged in formation
for Capuchin life, from initial “live-in’s” to two deacons who will soon be
ordained to the priesthood. These
numbers are impressive and we can only give thanks to God! As the feast days of St. Pio and St. Francis
draw near, please pray for vocations to the priesthood, religious life, to our
Poor Clare nuns and for faith-filled lay ministers. Pray also for the men and women in our parish currently
discerning God’s call in their lives. Young
People’s Faith Formation We are blest
with a small but growing number of young people attending the Sunday liturgy at
the Shrine. While we do not have a
religious education program, we will be happy to offer the necessary preparation
for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. If there are any children in your family
who: 1) have been baptized and, 2) are in second grade or above and have yet to
receive their First Eucharist, please contact Fr. Phil to discuss this
possibility at St. Paul’s. A Retreat for Gay & Lesbian Catholics Emmaus
2004, a retreat for Gay and Lesbian Catholics, is a weekend of prayer and
solitude for gay and lesbian Catholics from the Greater Cleveland area. It will be facilitated by Father Stephen
Krupa, S.J., and Sister Marian Durkin, C.S.A., and a retreat team of gay
lesbian Catholics. The retreat has been
designed as a celebration and deepening of Catholic faith and sharing among
retreatants. EMMAUS will take place at
the Jesuit Retreat House, 5629 State Road in Parma from Friday, October 8th
through Sunday, October 10th.
Please call Jesuit Retreat House at 440-884-9300 for information and
reservations. Helen D. Schubert Cathedral Concert Series-Fall Rose
Ensemble (St. Paul, MN) with Jordan Sramek, director on Sunday, October 10th
at 3:00pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. In this program spanning four centuries of
vocal and instrumental music, a diverse collection of lyric poetry, Italian
spiritual songs, Latin Hymns, and Iberian Cantigas de Santa Maria tell of the
Virgin Mary’s sometimes humorous, always incredible miracles. Poor Clare
Nuns Celebrate 150 Years! It was in 1921 that
Archbishop Joseph Schrembs invited the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual
Adoration to the Diocese of Cleveland to begin a ministry of Eucharistic
adoration and prayer for the people of the City and Diocese of Cleveland. For 83 years, the Eucharist has been
perpetually adored in the city thanks to the vocation and life of the Nuns of
Saint Paul’s. We celebrate with you in
this year of Jubilee! RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Are
you interested in learning more about your Catholic faith? Are you or do you know someone who may be
interested in joining the Catholic Church?
Were you baptized in the Catholic Church but now stand in need of
additional faith and sacramental formation?
The RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, is a process
through which individuals first seek to understand God’s
presence in their lives and then see if that presence is best nourished and
fulfilled within the Catholic Church.
This journey of faith begins with the inquiry phase of the RCIA in the
fall and culminates with the Easter sacraments celebrated at the Easter Vigil
on Holy Saturday. If your answer to any
of the questions above is “yes”, please contact Fr. Phil to explore the RCIA. Cleveland Catholic Forum The
Cleveland Catholic Forum welcomes Ray Flynn, former Ambassador to the Vatican,
to the Cleveland State University Gordon Conference Pavilion on Monday, October
18th,
for a talk entitled; “Vote 2004 – The Catholic Factor.” Tickets are $10.00 and may be reserved by
calling toll free: 866-299-7476. New Web Site for St. Paul Shrine One
