our history

The Most Reverend Ignatius F. Horstmann founded the parish of Saint Ignatius of Antioch on 2 September 1902.  Its organization was entrusted to the first pastor, the Reverend Joseph Hoerstmann.  The following year, on 15 March 1903, the first parish meeting was held in Howland’s Hall at the corner of Lorain and Minton Avenue.

On 18 October 1925 the cornerstone was laid for the present church.  The grand structure was designed by the architect E.T.P. Graham of Boston and completed in 1930.  In 1984 the building was declared a landmark of the City of Cleveland.

The church is constructed of Bedford limestone in the Romanesque tradition, showing a Byzantine influence in the slender marble columns of the recessed triple entrance and the delicacy of the stonework.  A tall minaret-like campanile (bell tower) rises from the east transept.  The great depth of the nave, together with the lavish marble treatment, give a medieval atmosphere, but every significant feature has been subordinated to the jewel-like quality of the stained-glass windows.

In the 1960’s the parish saw “the coming of the roads” as Interstate 90 divided the neighborhood and cut through the west side community.  With the move to the suburbs and court ordered busing, there was great transition and much concern for the future of the parish and neighborhood.  With the advent of the Second Vatican Council, the spiritual renewal of the Church presented many challenges to the clergy, religious, and faithful.  The hallmarks of the Church in the modern world would include the beginning of a renewal movement, liturgical reforms, the formation of a parish council, and programs to meet the social concerns of peace and justice.

Today the parish maintains a membership of 2,100 households and 5,577 persons.  The parish staff includes priests, deacon, woman religious, lay workers, teachers, and other professionals.  Together we look forward to the 100 anniversary of the parish in the year 2002.
