A
MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR, FATHER TONY
Our
Jesus has been arrested, and beaten down by his captors. The crowd eagerly
awaits the mighty hosts of angels that will save Jesus, defeat the Romans,
punish the wicked, and give the Jewish people their land and their King. Sorry,
that is not going to happen. Is it no surprise that that the crowd who loved
Jesus when he entered Jerusalem, will now be the ones who jeer and spit upon
him? They didn’t get what they wanted. They wanted miracles. They wanted
spectacle. They wanted free food and drink forever. They wanted their dream
king for their free country. Instead they got to see an innocent man die.
We bring to our religion the same hopes and expectations. We want this. We want
that. We want the good old days. We want the future. So what do we get this
Passion Sunday? We get one another and the one faith that we share. We are
united in story and the Eucharist. Who will wipe away our tears? We will, for
one another. Who will visit the sick and the imprisoned? We will. Who will
fight for justice? You know whom. Get off of your seat and get to work. Jesus
chose to die as a human being, so as to sanctify our human estate. That which
is not redeemed, is not saved. Jesus was not about caring for himself, but for
the lost ones of Israel.
Our faith and religions must be inseparable from our flesh and blood. We should
not let our customs and religion get in the way of the Acts of Charity. We have
for our consolation the Beatitudes, and our hope in the love that cannot be
limited by time, space, or even Death. Hail King Jesus, whose kingdom has no
borders, whose only weapon is charity, his foot soldiers carpenters and
fishermen, whose treasure is the word and love of God.
Father Tony
THE PASSION AND HOLY WEEK
Holy Week is the culmination
of the Liturgical Year. On either end of the week is the proclamation of The
Passion of Jesus. On Palm Sunday this year we proclaim The Passion from Luke’s
Gospel. On Good Friday, The Passion found in the Gospel of John is always
proclaimed.
The Passion accounts are wonderful invitations to participate, pray and reflect
on the suffering of Jesus and how that suffering has meaning for us today. I
suggest “producing” these accounts with your family at home. You may be
surprised with new insights.
Luke’s account is marked by high emotion. An angel comes to Jesus in
Gethsemane, as his sweat drops like blood. Luke is the only writer to refer to
this event as an “agony.” Also Luke writes that Jesus turned and looked at
Peter as his friend denied him the third time. This adds to the pathos of the
event. Yet Jesus continues to heal. He reaches out to the women of Jerusalem,
asks forgiveness for those who persecute him and he comforts the repentant
thief. Intensifying the horror of the event, Luke mentions that Herod and
Pilate reconciled their differences! Luke portrays Jesus as the innocent martyr
that paves the way for future martyrs. Jesus’ innocence is stated by Pilate,
Herod, one of the thieves and the centurion (a roman soldier)!
John, on the other hand emphasizes that Jesus is not a victim. He voluntarily
lays down his life and Jesus is in control of his own destiny. In John’s
version, no one helps Jesus carries his cross. John’s concern in The Passion,
and his Gospel, is the cosmic conflict of dark vs. light, truth vs. falsehood
and life vs. death. The betrayal and arrest of Jesus takes place under the
cover of darkness, and despite the presence of the “Light of the World,” the
men need torches to light their way. Concluding John’s “majestic” passion is
the sacramental death of Jesus. The water and blood flowing from Jesus’ side
symbolizing baptism and Eucharist. These sacraments mark the beginning of the
new community that is to be started by “the mother of Jesus” (John never
mentions Mary’s name!) and the beloved disciple. John is the only Evangelist to
show Jesus not totally abandoned at the cross. Don’t miss the opportunity the
passion accounts offer. Read them with your family and enter into the mystery
of God’s saving work. Peace and All Good! Br. Mike. Next week’s
readings: Acts 10:34a, 37-43; Col 3:1- 4; Jn 20:1-9
Peace, Br. Mike.
Readings for next week (Palm Sunday) Is 50: 4-7; Phil 2:6-11; Luke 22: 14 –
23:56.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Saint Vincent de Paul
conference
While
the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Rose church currently has many members,
we are always looking for parishioners who are interested in joining our group.
We meet in the rectory on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 PM. Please join
us for a meeting. Financial emergencies can happen at anytime and to anyone. A
donation to the parish SVDP Society will help the needy individuals and
families who live within our parish community. Your contribution does help! The
ushers, standing at the doors as you exit church will have the SVDP baskets.
Your continued support is appreciated and a big thank you to our ushers.
