MISSION STATEMENT

Our philosophy begins with faith; faith in God, our Creator; faith in Jesus Christ, His Son; and faith in the Holy Spirit, our guiding light.  The development and nurturing of this faith are brought about by following Christ’s teachings and sharing His message through our daily actions.

We believe education begins with the family and is supported by the school and the parish community.  The school shares in the family’s responsibility of education by providing the structure for the student to grow in the love of God, to develop the unique talents that he/she possesses, and to learn the importance and responsibility of contributing and sharing as a member of the community.

We believe it is important for the student to develop a sense of self-worth and self-discipline, as well as a respect and love for others.  Included with this respect and love is an awareness for the cultural differences among people, and a willingness to appreciate these differences in the light of oneness in God’s family.

We believe that through the cooperation of the family and the school, each student may be able to realize a deep concern for his/her brothers and sisters, thereby forming a personal response in truth, justice and love that will guide him/her throughout life.

ADMISSION POLICIES

Admission Priority is given in the following order:

1.      Parishioners of St. Leo the Great:

a.      Families with children currently enrolled in school.

b.      Families with children to be enrolled in school.

c.      New Parishioners transferring from another Catholic school.

d.      New Parishioners transferring from public school.

2.      Non-Parishioners.

Admission Policy:  Parishioners

Admission of parishioners is made through formal registration.  At this time, evidence of active membership in a supporting parish, birth certificate, baptismal certificate, record of physical examination and immunization records are required.  Students transferring from other private schools must have met all financial obligations at the previous school prior to acceptance.

Admission Policy:  Non-Parishioners

St. Leo the Great School respects all faiths and nationalities, but recognizes it obligation as a parochial elementary school to serve first the members of this parish.

Non-parishioners will be accepted if there is room at the grade level and all parishioners of St. Leo the Great have been accepted.  Non-Catholic parents understand that their children will be enrolled in daily religion classes and will attend religious services with the class.

Kindergarten:

Children entering kindergarten must be five years of age by September 30.  Incoming kindergartners will be screened by the Early Prevention of School Failure readiness assessment.

Grades 1-8:

Transfer students must produce their previous report card.  Application will not be complete until all academic and health records have been received from the transfer school.  Due to the difficulty of adjustment, transfers from grades 7 and 8 are ordinarily limited to students previously enrolled in a Catholic school.  Each case is handled on an individual basis.
